CFGC awards grants
WAYNESBURG – The Community Foundation of Greene County awarded $25,000 in grants to 10 organizations last November for a variety of purposes.
Receiving grant money were: Corner Cupboard Food Bank, Rices Landing Volunteer Fire Department, Central Greene School District, Clarksville Christian Church, Community Action Southwest, Cornerstone Care, County of Greene, Fayette County Community Action, Flenniken Public Library and Humane Society of Greene County.
Central Greene School District was awarded $3,000 for a swing set area for the kindergarten playground. Clarksville Christian Church was given $3,000 for a stair lift to enable handicapped individual to attend events held in the social hall of the church’s basement.
Community Action Southwest received $2,000 for Early Head Start “The Incredible Years,” a program that provides child development and family support services for eligible pregnant women and families with children under age three.
Cornerstone Care obtained $2,500 for the Smile for Life Oral Health Outreach. The County of Greene was allotted $2,000 for the 2015 Department of Recreation Day Camp Program.
Fayette County Community Action was given $1,000 for Bringing Nutrition Home, a program that helps first-time mothers learn the importance of well-balanced meals in the home.
Flenniken Public Library received $900 for a Community Garden Water Project, a low-cost method of watering gardens by using rain barrels.
Humane Society of Greene County received $1,000 for an animal relief fund, which pays for emergency veterinary care.
Corner Cupboard Food Bank was provided $4,000 in grant money from the Good for Greene Fund to Ending Hunger in Greene County, which provides food bags for children over holidays when they have no access to school meals.
“The grant’s purpose was to provide children with special kids bags that contain kid-friendly food that children can use on their own without a parent to cook for them,” said Maribeth Coote, executive director of the Corner Cupboard Food Bank.
Through November and December, the Corner Cupboard Food Bank filled 1,200 bags containing juice boxes, granola bars, single serve macaroni and cheese Rice Krispy treats, individual cereal, shelf-stable milk, applesauce, raisins, and spaghetti and meatballs.
“We couldn’t have provided such a large number of children with bags without the support of the grant from Community Foundation of Greene County,” said Coote. “People in Greene County give to the Community Foundation and the Community Foundation gives to us. Our gratitude is to the people of Greene County who care about the most vulnerable. Ultimately we are grateful for the people in Greene County.”
A $5,000 grant was given to Rices Landing Volunteer Fire Department from the Community Foundation’s Fund for Community and Economic Development and The Bradford Fund.
“The grant from the Community Foundation of Greene County funded part one of a three-part project to create a safe and efficient shelter to benefit everyone in the event of an emergency,” said Ryan Belski, president of the fire company.
The $14,000 project will remove mold or other health hazards, as well as waterproofing the building for a safer environment for the fire company and community.
Applications for the summer communitygrant will be due June 1. Information and guidelines for the community grant applications are accessible on the CFGC website.
