Man accused of stealing ankle monitor

2 min read

A Canton Township man was charged Tuesday with theft by state police for allegedly absconding with an ankle monitor placed on him by a state parole official.

Eric Ramont Barfield, 37, whose last known address was on Caldwell Avenue, last had contact with his state parole agent Dec. 18. He was on electronic monitoring as part of his state parole. Barfield was sentenced in January 2009 to 5 to 10 years in a state penitentiary after being found guilty of burglarizing the home of his former girlfriend in December 2007.

His parole agent contacted state police Feb. 11 and asked theft charges be filed. She told the investigator the bracelet and accompanying equipment were valued at $1,640.

Barfield also was a no-show for a Feb. 9 preliminary hearing before District Judge Robert Redlinger. He was charged Dec. 11 with simple assault by Washington police.

Barfield was accused of assaulting a 26-year-old Washington woman Dec. 7 at a residence on Broad Street. The alleged victim told police Barfield slapped her in the face, knocking her to the floor. She said he then repeatedly kicked her while she was on the floor. The 26-year-old told police she went to Washington Hospital for treatment.

Redlinger held Barfield for court on the charge in his absence. He is scheduled to appear for formal arraignment on the assault charge April 23.

Barfield is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on the theft charge March 25 before District Judge David Mark.
