Four plead in California University tablet theft
Four Carmichaels residents were sentenced this week in Washington County Court for stealing iPads from California University of Pennsylvania’s nursing program and selling them at area resale stores.
Shannon Wallace, 42, of 107 N. Vine St., was a medical administrative assistant for Community College of Allegheny County assigned to work at Cal U. as part of a collaborative program between the two schools.
Howard F. Wallace Jr., 45, and Stephanie Yoder, 21, both of 107 N. Vine, and Ryan Havanis, 31, of 10 Biddle Acres, also were sentenced. Shannon and Howard Wallace are husband and wife. Yoder is the daughter of Shannon Wallace and Havanis is her boyfriend, according to court records.
Shannon Wallace pleaded guilty to theft Monday and was sentenced 30 days to 23 months in Washington County jail, three months of probation and 100 hours of community service. Howard Wallace and Stephanie Yoder were admitted into the Accelerated Rehabilitated Disposition program for first offenders for 23 months each for receiving stolen property and theft, while Havanis was admitted into the ARD program for 24 months for receiving stolen property. If they successfully complete the program, they can petition the court to have their criminal records expunged. All four are required to make restitution totaling $25,922.
Shannon Wallace ordered the iPads for students in the nursing program and took them from the university to resale stores, where she would exchange them for cash. Cal U. police said she stole the tablets between February 2011 and September 2013.
She enlisted the help of her husband, daughter and Havanis after she was red-flagged by the stores and could no longer sell them.
Investigators said 51 iPads and iPad Minis valued at $21,460 were stolen from the Morgan Research Center, and then sold at Game Stops in Washington, Belle Vernon, Uniontown and Morgantown, W.Va. Shannon Wallace told police she stole the tablets because of financial problems.
