Soil disposal work continues at W.Va. train derailment site

MOUNT CARBON, W.Va. (AP) — Response teams are continuing to restore the environment around a fiery train car derailment in southern West Virginia.

A statement Saturday from multiple agencies responding to the Feb. 16 derailment says excavated soil containing oil from the Mount Carbon site is being disposed at a Charleston facility. The removal is expected to take two weeks.

The statement says about 102,000 gallons of an oil-water mix have been recovered from containment trenches near the Kanawha River and are being sent to a southwestern Pennsylvania recycling facility.

About 172,000 gallons of crude oil recovered from the tank cars are being transferred to other tank cars for transport elsewhere.

Investigators have not determined what caused 27 of the CSX train’s 109 cars to go off the tracks during a snowstorm.
