LEWISBURG, W.Va. (AP) – A preliminary hearing is set for a Texas man charged in a shootout with police in West Virginia.

Twenty-one-year-old Eric Alexander Campbell of Alvin, Texas, was charged in West Virginia with attempted murder of a police officer and malicious assault of a police officer. His hearing is scheduled Wednesday in Greenbrier County Magistrate Court.

Campbell’s father, 54-year-old Edward Campbell of Alvin, faces similar charges.

State police said the Campbells were involved in a shootout with two Lewisburg officers on New Year’s Day during a traffic stop. Both men also are suspects in the deaths of a North Carolina couple.

Lewisburg Police Chief Tim Stover told The Register-Herald that the elder Campbell remains hospitalized in Charleston with a gunshot wound. He hasn’t been arraigned on the West Virginia charges.
