PITTSBURGH (AP) – An inmate at a Western Pennsylvania jail became ill and died less than a day after he was locked up.

The Tribune-Review reported 39-year-old Frank Jerome Smart was pronounced dead around 12:20 a.m. Monday at UPMC Mercy hospital.

An autopsy on the Allegheny County jail inmate was inconclusive. Officials said they’re waiting for the results of toxicology and tissue tests.

Smart was jailed at the Pittsburgh facility after his arraignment Sunday morning on forgery, theft and other charges.
