Mon-Fayette Expressway toll plaza reopens

2 min read

Engineers and crews from Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission completed repairs late Wednesday afternoon to the toll booth at the southbound California exit of Mon-Fayette Expressway (Toll 43) damaged in a crash earlier that morning.

Engineers did some cutting and welding to repair the damaged structure, said Renee Colborn, manager of media and public relations for the turnpike commission in Harrisburg.

State police said Douglas D. Baldwin, 52, of Rittman, Ohio, was driving south in the right lane of Toll 43, about 6:40 a.m. As he approached the toll booth at the California interchange, he moved his vehicle to the center lane.

Police said Baldwin was driving the tractor-trailer at a speed unsafe for conditions as he entered the toll booth area where the speed limit is 5 mph. The truck jackknifed and part of the vehicle hit the tool booth building in lane 2.

The rig blocked lanes 2 and 3 at the plaza until the wreckage was removed and repairs were made. There was initially a backlog in the area, but traffic was moving through the remaining open lane. Colborn said 5,750 vehicles travel northbound through the California interchange daily while 5,650 pass through the southbound side in that area.

Baldwin was taken to Monongahela Valley Hospital for treatment. He was cited with failure to drive at a safe speed, failure to obey traffic control devices, failure to stay in his lane, careless driving and reckless driving. The charges were filed Wednesday and will be sent by summons from the office of District Judge Joshua Kanalis. The truck is owned by D&B Fat Boy of Rittman.
