Pa. town rewriting pet rules after finding 72 snakes in home
CARBONDALE (AP) – It’s part Dr. Dolittle and part Noah’s Ark.
Officials in a Pennsylvania town are scrambling to rewrite pet ownership rules after finding 90 animals, including 72 snakes, living under one roof.
Carbondale Mayor Justin Taylor told WNEP-TV a zoning law loophole allowed the homeowner to build up the collection.
Officials also found 9 cats, 2 geckos, a dog, a turtle, a rabbit and a parrot.
Taylor told the station Thursday local laws outline parameters for pet ownership, including a ban on breeding and selling, but don’t set a limit or outlaw snakes.
Officials say the snakes were kept in a stack of plastic containers and appeared healthy. Still, some residents of the Scranton suburb say they’re concerned about having so many snakes nearby.
