Several residents of Canonsburg’s East End made an expensive discovery Sunday morning when they awoke to discover tires on their vehicles were slashed.

Four vehicles were hit on Giffin Avenue, two on Second Street and one each on McNary and Franklin streets. Most of the tires were flattened by the vandal slicing the sidewall.

One resident whose car suffered tire damage told police he heard his dog barking at 3 a.m. The resident on McNary told police he let his dog out about 5:30 a.m. and found that three tires on his vehicle were damaged.

Police Chief Al Coghill said the damage seems to have happened between 3 and 6 a.m.

“It appears to be random acts of mischief,” Coghill said. “There doesn’t appear to be anything to connect the victims with each other.”

About a dozen tires were slashed. Coghill estimated the damage at $3,000.

Police are checking homes equipped with surveillance cameras. Coghill said one resident notified police after spotting a suspicious vehicle that appeared twice, driving slowly in the area.

“We’ve used surveillance cameras that people have put outside their house to solve crimes in the past,” the chief said. “We are asking residents with cameras to take a look so we can find the one responsible for the damage.”

Coghill said Detective Michael Ledger is investigating the damage. Anyone with information on the vandalism is asked to call Ledger at 724-745-8020, ext. 523.
