On the menu this week: Solving the mystery meal
The negative of this picture was found loose in the archives of the Observer-Reporter, having somehow slipped out of its box. As a result, we don’t know where or when it was taken, or who the young women are. We’re hoping some of our readers might recognize them and provide us with the information that will allow this week’s Mystery Photo to find its way back home.
The clothing seems to date the photo to the late 1960s, when high school cafeterias provided little or no choice. Under magnification, these girls appear to all be dining on sloppy joes, green beans, potato chips, dessert and white milk. How well would that menu be accepted today?
The reason for this photo is something else we don’t know. Perhaps this was not just a typical day at school but some special occasion. It seems odd that almost all of the people in the background are female.
If you think you might be able to help us solve this puzzle, email Park Burroughs, retired executive editor, at pburroughs@observer-reporter.com, or call and leave a message for him along with your telephone number at 724-222-2200, extension 2400. With a little luck and assistance from our readers, we might be able to crack this case and publish our findings next Monday.
