Household chemical collection planned
A collection event on July 18 at Washington Mall will provide area residents with an opportunity to safely and cost effectively dispose of common household chemicals.
Pennsylvania Resources Council will hold the event to collect household chemical products known as “household hazardous waste” such as cleaners, paints, stains and varnishes, batteries, motor oil, pesticides and other products containing potentially hazardous chemicals from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the JCPenney parking lot of Washington Mall (entrance at Route 19 and Oak Spring Road). According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, an average home can easily accumulate 100 pounds of these products.
The cost to safely dispose of materials at all collections is $3 per gallon, cash only. A certified contractor processes the hazardous wastes collected for proper disposal. Materials may be recycled, incinerated or safely buried in special landfills.
