Ex-Wheeling Island worker sentenced in casino theft

1 min read

WHEELING (AP) – A former Wheeling Island Hotel, Casino and Racetrack employee has been sentenced in the theft of more than $300,000 from the casino.

Mark E. Patterson of Wellsburg received a one-year prison sentence on Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Wheeling. The 47-year-old Wellsburg resident had pleaded guilty to wire fraud in October 2014.

Patterson formerly was Wheeling Island’s main vault banker. U.S. Attorney William J. Ihlenfeld II says Patterson used his position to steal money from the casino.

Ihlenfeld says in a news release that Patterson routinely underreported daily cash proceeds earned on the casino floor. He deposited the stolen money into various personal bank accounts.
