Meeting roundup
Washington City Council
Date: July 9
Action: During public comment, resident Phyllis Waller questioned council about the expansion of the Budd Baer car dealership. Waller asked when the lots behind Murtland Avenue became a business lot, whether Budd Baer owned any alleys in the area, whether homeowners can express concerns before a business encroaches on a residential area and whether the Highland Ridge neighborhood will be affected by increased traffic.
Council approved an application from Jim Hough to open a whiskey distillery called Mingo Creek Craft Distillers at 68 W. Maiden St.
Angela Burgess, of A&M Wine and Beer Supplies and the Washington Winery, was appointed to fill a vacant position on the Washington Business District Authority for the remainder of 2015.
Council voted to recommend to county commissioners that Councilman Ken Westcott and Mayor Brenda Davis be appointed to the Washington County Transportation Authority Board.
Council voted 3-1 to award the city’s liability insurance policy for the next year to EHD at a total premium of $139,175. Councilwoman Tracie Graham was absent, and Mayor Brenda Davis voted against the motion, which replaced the insurance carrier that the city has used for about 10 years. Davis said she voted against the motion because EHD excludes more than the city’s current policy and increases the deductible for collision, comprehensive coverage and property liability.
That same motion also approved the hiring of CT Consultants as the city’s grant writer.
Council approved proposals from Widmer Engineering Inc. for the Burton Avenue stormwater sewer project at a cost of $13,200; the Washington Park Tennis Court rehabilitation at a cost of $9,250; the Colt Field stormwater project at a cost of $10,000; and the Dunn Avenue sidewalk project a cost of $11,000.
