Woman charged in North Strabane crash
A Canton Township woman was charged by North Strabane Township police in connection with a crash earlier this month in which she gave the officer her friend’s name and other information at the scene.
Samantha Rae Thomas, 23, of 293 McClay Road, is charged with driving under the influence of heroin, identity theft, falsely incriminating another person, false identification to law enforcement, possession of paraphernalia, careless driving and driving an uninspected vehicle.
The head-on crash happened July 13 on Galley Road near Route 19. At the scene, Thomas told police that she did not have her license with her and provided the name and other information of a friend. She had borrowed the vehicle she was driving from that friend. She also gave the friend’s name to the staff at Canonsburg Hospital, where she was taken after the crash.
Police also found empty stamp bags in the vehicle.
Police learned her correct name after the friend saw her name listed as the driver in the newspaper a few days after the crash.
The charges were sent Tuesday by summons from the office of District Judge Jay Weller. She is scheduled for a preliminary hearing before Weller Sept. 9.
