Driver injured in tanker crash
A woman was injured Friday night when a tanker overturned on Route 88 in Jefferson Township and its tank disconnected from the rig and rolled into her sport-utility vehicle.
State police said Melissa Rohland, 36, of Centerville, suffered moderate injuries shortly after 5 p.m. when her SUV was struck by the tanker about a mile north of Dry Tavern.
The driver of the tanker, Richard H. Conrad, 41, of Punxsutawney, was traveling south when he encountered a sharp curve and lost control of his rig.
Police said the “tank disengaged from the body and as it was falling to the ground it was struck on the top rear hatch” by Rohland’s northbound SUV.
The tank and SUV were pushed into a detached garage along the side of the road.
The garage and Rohland’s vehicle sustained heavy damage in the crash, while Conrad’s rig came to rest on the driver’s side.
Police said Rohland was taken by ambulance to Mon Valley Hospital in Carroll Township for treatment. Her husband, Kevin Roland, said she was released from the hospital over the weekend.
“She’s still in rough shape,” he said Monday morning.
Investigators said Conrad was speeding and he faces multiple traffic citations following the crash. He was wearing a seatbelt and not injured in the crash, police said.
Police did not say what company Conrad was driving for or whether the tank was filled at the time of the crash.
