Wolf’s pick for police commissioner goes before Senate panel

1 min read

CARLISLE (AP) – Gov. Tom Wolf’s choice to lead the Pennsylvania State Police will go before skeptical Republican senators who, like the troopers’ union, have asked the Democratic governor to withdraw Col. Marcus Brown as his nominee.

Brown’s Wednesday hearing before the Senate Law and Justice Committee is a step toward determining whether he’ll serve as the full, permanent commissioner, or whether he can only serve in an acting capacity.

Wolf says Brown is qualified for the post and refuses to withdraw his nomination.

Brown, who rose to No. 2 in the Baltimore Police Department, is the former Maryland State Police superintendent. However, he rankled troopers with his decision to wear the uniform, despite not attending the State Police Academy, and critics say Brown has exhibited a lack of integrity in a variety of his dealings.
