Canon-McMillan H.S. graduates 380
Canon-McMillan High School will graduate 380 seniors at its commencement ceremony at 7 p.m. today.
Valedictorian is Maxwell Martin and salutatorian is Elizabeth Freeman.
Martin is a son of Barry and Lori Martin of North Strabane Township.
Martin was awarded the Carnegie Mellon Presidential Scholarship, the U.S. Marine Corps Scholastic Excellence Award, the Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Award, and the Harvard Book Award for highest GPA and outstanding character. He was a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish National Honor Society, lacrosse team, math league, computer science club and Science Olympiad. Martin was the captain of Academic League, the Hometown Hi-Q team and the Science Bowl. He was an AP Scholar with Distinction and participated in Westinghouse Science Honors Institute.
Martin will attend Carnegie Mellon University pursue a degree in biology and plans to study medicine.
Freeman is a daughter of Carolyn and Daniel Freeman of Cecil Township.
Freeman was awarded the Zollman Scholarship, STRIDE Scholarship, Consol Energy Inc. Environmental Scholarship and the Canonsburg Bureau of Professional Women Scholarship. She participated in Westinghouse Science Honors Institute.
She was a member of marching band, pep band, clarinet choir, French club, ski club, environmental club, Envirothon, Southwestern Academic League, math league and Hometown Hi-Q team.
She will attend Smith College and is currently undecided on a major.
Ela Garbioglu will serve as the honor speaker. She is a daughter of Ibrahim and Aysen Garbioglu of North Strabane Township. She received the Howard J. Burnett Presidential Scholarship and was a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society and the band.
She plans to attend Washington & Jefferson College.
