Emily Harris

Washington High School will graduate 72 seniors at its commencement ceremony at 6:30 p.m. today in the high school gymnasium.

Jan Ivery, Superintendent Roberta DiLorenzo, valedictorian Jenna Lynn Shallcross and salutatorian Emily Ann Harris will be speakers.

Shallcross is a daughter of Bryan and Amy Shallcross of Washington.

She was awarded the Elks Most Valuable Student State Award, Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen essay contest winner, National Honor Society leadership and 2015 Congressional Leaders of Tomorrow awards, Scholastic art and writing, Silver Key and three writing merits, and Washington Financial, Christina M. Pollock, Washington Lions Club, Kiwanis Club of Washington, Washington Rotary Club, Clyde J. Tracanna/Washington Rotary Club and Washington Education Association scholarships, was the 2014 homecoming queen and 2014 Amelia Earhart honoree by the Zonta Club of Washington County. In addition to many community service activies, including Citizens Library summer reading program and Washington City Mission Sweet Sunday, Shallcross was a member of National Honor Society, Bible Club, cross country team, Prexie Performers, Grace Christian Dance Company and Fusion Youth Group.

She is a pianist and sings in a worship band.

She plans to attend Grove City College in the fall and study mathematics with a secondary education certification.

Harris is a daughter of Jeffrey Dean Harris of Washington and Judy Lynn Harris of Washington.

She was awarded the Italian-American Cultural and Heritage Society College, American Association of University Women, Eva and Iva Cowley, A.J. Drexel and Temple University scholarships and achieved the North American Steel Band Association Citation of Excellence, Daniel T. Perkins Challenge program award and high honors.

She was a member of National Honor Society, math competition team and the steel, jazz and marching bands. Her many volunteer activities include annual park clean-ups at Mingo and Cross Creek parks.

Harris plans to attend the University of Pittsburgh for a degree in physics/astrophysics.
