A sheriff’s deputy who accompanied a Washington County jail inmate to Washington Hospital, from which she escaped last week, has been suspended without pay.

“He was in violation of our policy in our office,” Sheriff Samuel Romano said Wednesday. “He’s a 25-year veteran, and this is the first time anything’s been on his record.”

Romano declined to identify the deputy who had been guarding Angela Marie Lucci, 24, of Perry Como Street, Canonsburg. He also did not specify what departmental policy had been violated, so as to not tip off other inmates.

Lucci was under observation at the hospital for a head or leg injury when she asked to use the restroom and slipped out of leg shackles. She is accused of stealing a car from the 400 block of Wilson Avenue and using it to drive to the Steubenville, Ohio, area, where Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies took her into custody.

“I’m not real happy about it,” Romano said. “Luckily, no one was injured ,and we picked her up not long after that. It’s an ongoing investigation, so I can’t really say too much.”

On June 9, Canonsburg police charged Lucci with forgery, receiving stolen property, access device fraud and conspiracy. When police took her into custody on those charges, they said she had a dose of suspected heroin, three Suboxone strips, about two dozen empty stamp bags, spoons and needles.
