Getting creative with a waffle iron for National Waffle Iron Day
National Waffle Iron Day is June 29, and these modern wonders do more than make golden-baked waffles.
Observer-Reporter video intern Mallory Rogers tried out some recipes to show off the versatility of a waffle iron. These include grilled cheese sandwiches, quesadillas, hash browns, chocolate chip cookies and even a wonut- a delicious combination of a waffle/donut. Check out her video that includes ingredients and instructions for making these waffled treats. The best part about these recipes is that the cook time is cut in half – only 3 minutes for a chocolate chip cookie? Yes, please!
Waffle irons have been used since the 1300’s, but it wasn’t until 1911 that General Electric created the first electric waffle iron that is similar to today’s version. One famous way a waffle iron was used for not making waffles was in 1971 when Nike Co-founder Bill Bowerman experimented with his wife’s waffle iron to melt a waffle tread in shoe soles that would eventually become Nike’s trademark running shoe.
