Local heavyweight boxer arrested for insurance fraud
Local heavyweight boxer Jason L. Bergman and his wife, Sheana M. Bergman, were arrested earlier this month for insurance fraud offenses.
According to a report released by state Attorney General Kathleen G. Kane’s office, the Bergmans, both 31, of 1601 Clubhouse Circle, Washington, were among 20 people arrested as a result of investigations by the attorney general’s insurance fraud section.
They were arrested June 18 and charged with two counts each of insurance fraud and one count of criminal attempt to commit theft by deception. According to the report, the Bergmans made a claim stating Sheana was involved in a minor accident, but the investigation revealed Jason, an excluded driver on the insurance policy, was driving when the accident occurred. Bail was set at $10,000 each.
Jason Bergman formerly held the WBA-NABA U.S. Heavyweight boxing title.
“I am letting my lawyers handle this,” said Bergman, noting he has a hearing regarding the issue this week.
In an unrelated incident, Bryan Cherry, 31, of 239 Burton Ave., Washington, was arrested June 18 and charged with one count each of insurance fraud and criminal attempt to commit theft by deception. According to the report, the attorney general’s office received a referral from an insurance company revealing Cherry reported an accident about 20 minutes after obtaining an insurance policy. Investigators determined the accident occurred about two hours before Cherry purchased the policy. His bail was set at $10,000.
