Flood warning issued for Monongahela River at Charleroi
CHARLEROI – The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh has issued a minor flood warning for the Monongahela River in Charleroi through Thursday morning because of warmer temperatures, rain and melting snow.
The service expected the river to sharply rise to 28.8 feet by Thursday morning. It is temporarily suspending navigation at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Locks and Dam No. 4 at Charleroi, the NWS stated on its website Tuesday night. The river begins to flood in Charleroi when it reaches a depth of 29 feet.
The rain and melting snow accumulations were expected to reach 2.5 inches in West Virginia, and the river crest could change over the next 48 hours, the weather service stated.
The service urged motorists to avoid driving through flooded areas. It initially issued a flood watch Monday in anticipation of Tuesday’s weather.
