Commissioners hire new executive director for the Greene County Redevelopment Authority
WAYNESBURG – A former university administrator was hired Thursday by the Greene County commissioners to lead the Greene County Redevelopment Authority.
David Calvario of Waynesburg was hired as the authority’s executive director at a salary of $51,500 to replace David Mirkovich, who will retire at the end of the month.
“I’m excited,” Calvario said following the salary board meeting. “My family will be able to stay here. We’ve been here for 19 years, and we know the community well.”
At least for the immediate future, Calvario said, his duties with the authority will continue the focus on developing housing.
The authority earlier received two competitive grants from the Pennsylvania Housing Affordability and Rehabilitation Enhancement Act program, for a total of $846,000, to fund a project aimed at addressing blighted properties.
The grant money, plus contributions from the county and municipalities, are being used to rehabilitate vacant and dilapidated houses as well as to demolish houses that are beyond repair to provide lots for new home construction.
Calvario, who has a doctorate in college administration, was employed as an administrator at Waynesburg University for about 19 years and most recently served as interim director of the Corner Cupboard Food Bank.
He is active with Greene County Habitat for Humanity, a deacon at First Presbyterian Church and involved in a number of other community activities.
“The board is looking forward to working with him,” said Marcia Sonneborn, authority chairman. “He brings a lot of community experience and administrative ability to the job and has real passion for working on housing issues and the removal of blight.”
Sonneborn said the authority is sorry to see Mirkovich leave but believes Calvario will serve the authority well.
