Meeting recap: Canon-McMillan School Board
• Date: March 19
• Action:
• The board authorized a second traffic study at the site of the future Muse Elementary School at a cost not to exceed $5,500.
• A five-year contract was renewed for Matt Zewalk, facilities coordinator.
• A wellness course was added for the seventh grade.
• The board discussed the district’s desire to stop enrolling students in academic classes, including math and English, at Western Area Career and Technology Center. Superintendent Michael Daniels said it would be a cost-saving measure and would allow students to focus more attention on their certificate programs. He said other districts have expressed their desire to do away with those types of instruction. The nine schools districts that send students to vocational-technical classes will vote on the matter.
• The board recognized two teams from Canonsburg Middle School that participated in the third annual American Bowl Competition. Team members Wes Richmond, Cameron Bunner, Max Szalla and Matt Liberatore were on the first-place team with a score of 178/200. Teams answered more than 60 questions in categories including famous people, Pittsburgh and civics. Eighteen schools participated.
• Atharv Bhave, a seventh-grade student at Canonsburg Middle School, was recognized for winning the 65th annual Western Pa. Spelling Bee with the word “frenetically.” He will compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington in May.
