Canton man arrested after answering door with shotgun

A Canton Township man was arrested Monday afternoon after he answered the door holding a shotgun when four state troopers went to his home in response to an alleged domestic dispute.
Troopers were called to the home of Michael Lee Cole, 24, of 1520 Jefferson Ave., about 1:30 p.m. for a report of an argument where girlfriend had been locked out by her boyfriend.
Cole’s girlfriend, Shelby Konwalski, told troopers she and Cole were fighting for the last few days. Konwalski told police she wanted to get back into the house so she could get items for work but that Cole locked her out.
Troopers Jeff Tihey and Ray Harding knocked loudly on Cole’s door six times, announcing they were state police. Cole finally came to the door holding a black shotgun and yelled at the troopers, “I just want you all to leave, get … out of here.” Tihey then shut the door and told the other troopers Cole had a shotgun.
The troopers retreated and took cover. Trooper Nick Benkovich made several attempts on the public address system to get Cole to come out of his home. After a communications officer spoke to Cole on the telephone, he opened the front door and came out unarmed. Harding told Cole to put his hands behind his back. Cole allegedly resisted and had to be wrestled to the ground.
When police entered the home they saw a glass bong, a glass smoking pipe and suspected marijuana in the living room. Additional paraphernalia was found in an orange plastic box. Konwalski directed troopers to a locked gun safe. A rifle and the shotgun were seized by police.
Cole was arraigned before District Judge David Mark on charges of aggravated assault, terroristic threats, simple assault, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and possession of marijuana and paraphernalia. He was placed in Washington County jail on $100,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is set for April 22.
