Bird-watching event planned
Experienced bird-watchers Larry Helgerman and Mary Grey will lead a birding exploration for the public through Audubon’s Important Bird Area 80 in the Buffalo Creek Watershed. The group will meet at 7:30 a.m. Sunday in the parking area of the “S” Bridge at the intersection of Routes 40 and 221 in Buffalo Township, just north of the Taylorstown Exit of I-70.
This walking and driving tour will encompass riparian stream banks, open fields, mature forests and wetlands. Birds in these areas may include great blue herons, kingfishers, field sparrows, rose-breasted grosbeaks, scarlet tanagers, woodpeckers, waterfowl, spring warblers and the cerulean warbler. The blue-hued cerulean warbler is designated a “species of special concern” in Pennsylvania and a “focus species” of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which is making efforts made to protect its mature forest habitats.
Those attending should dress for the weather and wear comfortable footwear. Participants are encouraged to bring your binoculars, cameras and bottled water. Anyone with questions can call Donna Riggle, Buffalo Creek Watershed Association secretary, at 724-484-7537.
