Food drive planned for Election Day
A group of “inspired” leaders from Greene County is spearheading a countywide food drive on the courthouse steps on Election Day to benefit the Corner Cupboard Food Bank.
“My hope is that people will fulfill two privileges on May 19,” Corner Cupboard Food Bank Executive Director said. “The privilege of voting and giving.”
Inspire Greene County is a leadership development class and faith-based collaborative initiative for leaders throughout the county. Its purpose is to build leaders and develop lasting collaborative efforts which will impact the community.
“This group of people is all very busy they have full-time jobs, families and many commitments,” Coote said. “Not only have they taken the time to take this class, but they have chosen to invest in their neighbors in need. We are truly humbled by this gift.”
The Election Day food drive will run on the courthouse steps from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. During the drive, donations and nonperishable food will be accepted. The most commonly used goods for distribution are corn, green beans, peanut butter, spaghetti noodles, spaghetti sauce, cereal, canned fruit and macaroni and cheese.
Corner Cupboard Food Bank has 11 pantries throughout Greene County and serves 2,000 individuals a month. It costs $125 to feed one individual for the year, Coote said. The annual distribution of nearly 800,000 pounds of food is done by two employees, nine board members, 16 pantry coordinators and 150 volunteers.
The food bank’s annual operating budget is about $250,000.
“If someone can’t come to the food drive, it’s important to know that for every $1 given to us we can buy $5 worth of groceries,” Coote said.
