Police: Girl, 11, brought drugs to school

1 min read

An 11-year-old girl was charged with a felony and her mother faces charges after the girl took a bag of marijuana to Washington Park Elementary School Friday afternoon and gave it to a 13-year-old boy, city police Lt. David Bradley said.

A teacher intervened after seeing the children with the bag.

The teacher took the students to the office, where principal Kelley Zebrasky contacted police.

Bradley said the girl was charged with felony delivery and one count of possession of marijuana, a misdemeanor. The boy was charged with possession of marijuana.

Bradley said the girl reported that she took the marijuana bag, worth about $60, from her mother’s purse.

The mother, Roseann Johnson of Addison Avenue, Washington, will be charged later with possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia, and endangering the welfare of children, according to Bradley.

Bradley said typically children who commit felonies are sent to a detention center, but the juvenile probation office declined to send the girl.

Both children were released into their parents’ custody.

Washington School Board member William Braun Jr. said the children’s offenses will be addressed by administration and according to the school district’s drug policy.
