A Burgettstown man wanted on an arrest warrant for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend Monday was taken into custody early Tuesday.

Jason Robert Winner, 27, of 80 Center Ave., contacted McDonald police Tuesday morning, telling an officer he understood there was a warrant out for his arrest. He made arrangements to turn himself in to police at the Burgettstown station. He was then taken to Washington County jail to await arraignment.

Police were called to his apartment just before 1 a.m. Monday for a report of a domestic dispute. Police were on their way when they learned that the man involved, later identified as Winner, was locked outside of the house. Police checked the area but were unable to locate him.

Winner’s 21-year-old girlfriend told police he had been drinking at a bar in Burgettstown for most of the night. When Winner came home, he allegedly confronted her about rumors he claimed to have heard about her at the bar. He also called her derogatory names, police said.

The two got into an argument that escalated when Winner allegedly started throwing items, including some thrown toward a couch where two children were sleeping. The girlfriend told police she threw a fan into the kitchen.

Winner allegedly grabbed his girlfriend by the hair and began striking her head against a wall. Police said she suffered cuts on her forehead, left forearm and wrist and lower leg, and also complained about neck pain.

Winner was arraigned before District Judge David Mark on a simple assault charge and two counts of harassment. He was jailed on $5,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is set for May 26 before District Judge Gary Havelka.
