Pennsylvania tavern built in 1735 burns down, nobody hurt
MACUNGIE, Pa. (AP) — A Pennsylvania tavern housed in a building erected nearly 300 years ago has burned, but nobody inside was hurt.
The fire started at the Buckeye Tavern in Lower Macungie Township about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. It’s located about 60 miles northwest of Philadelphia, close to Allentown.
Employees and patrons left the bar as word of the fire spread. It was under control in about 90 minutes, but much of the structure was gone. The tavern’s original stone walls, most recently restored in 2000, were still standing, but it wasn’t immediately clear if they might also be lost due to the other damage.
The building housing the tavern was built in 1735. The Buckeye Tavern website says the building has housed a neighborhood eatery since 1768.
The current owners bought it in 1987.
