Careless smoking blamed in Washington fire
Careless smoking is believed to the cause of a fire that damaged a converted house at 877 N. Main St., Washington, that is used as offices for A Caring Mission.
City firefighters were called after 7 p.m. Friday for a report of a fire. Fire Chief Linn Brookman said it appears that fire started on the back porch and was started by a cigarette that someone smoked earlier in the day and left to smolder.
The fire started on the porch, spread through the wall, into the basement and up a wall into the attic.
Brookman said the offices had closed at 5 p.m. and no one was in the building. No injuries were reported.
