WAYNESBURG – Southwest Regional Medical Center is being recognized by a national safety organization for being one of the top-rated hospitals in the country with less than 100 beds.

SafeCare Group listed the hospital in Franklin Township in its annual Top 100 list and was just one of two medical centers in Pennsylvania to make that rating.

“We are incredibly proud of this designation and all of our physicians, nurses and employees who worked so diligently to earn it,” Southwest Regional Medical Center CEO Cindy Cowie said in a written statement. “I see our employees go above and beyond each and every day to ensure we are providing the best care possible. This designation validates their extraordinary hard work and dedication.”

The rating comes less than two weeks after the Washington Health System announced it planned to acquire Southwest Regional from Tennessee-based RegionalCare. The sale is expected to be completed by July 1, hospital officials said.

More than 1,000 hospitals were analyzed nationwide in three separate categories depending on the number of beds. The hospitals were ranked in 40 categories that included 30-day mortality rates, infections, readmissions and complication rates in medical and surgical care.

“This designation is very much something to celebrate,” Washington Health System Vice President of Operations Terry Wiltrout said.

The medical center has 49 beds and offers 24-hour emergency services.
