Charleroi man charged in fatal February crash

2 min read

A Charleroi man was arraigned Monday morning on charges including homicide by vehicle in the Feb. 22 crash on Interstate 70 near the south junction with Interstate 79 in South Strabane Township that killed a North Strabane Township man and seriously injured the man’s son.

Bryan D. Anthony, 36, of 111 Shady Ave., was arraigned before District Judge Jay Weller on charges filed by state police including homicide by vehicle, aggravated assault by vehicle, failure to stay in his lane, improper driving on divided highways, speeding and careless driving in the crash that killed 45-year-old Brian L. Anselmino. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Anselmino’s 13-year-old son, Anthony Anselmino, was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital after the four-vehicle crash.

Anthony was driving west in the westbound lanes just before 1 p.m. when his vehicle went into the median and crossed into the eastbound lanes, striking Anselmino’s sport utility vehicle and causing it to roll on its side. A state police accident reconstruction specialist determined that Anthony was driving 68 mph in the 55 mph zone.

Anthony’s car then struck an eastbound tractor-trailer driven by Jack Pranno, 52, of Washington state. The rig became disabled and struck Anselmino’s vehicle before veering across the median and onto the westbound side of the highway, jackknifing and blocking both lanes.

A vehicle driven by a fourth motorist, Matthew Stantspainter, 36, of Washington, struck debris in the westbound lanes and traveled into the median, where it came to rest facing eastbound. Police said neither Pranno nor Stantspainter was injured.

Anselmino had been a standout basketball player at Ringgold High School and Duquesne University, as well as being involved as a coach of youth sports. He also was, for several years, a volunteer and later paid boys basketball coach at Canon-McMillan High School.

Anthony was released on $50,000 unsecured bond. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in Central Court May 27.
