A Taylorstown man escaped injury Monday morning when several shots were fired at his car from a passing vehicle on Gibson Avenue in Washington.

But the circumstances behind the shooting remain a mystery for Washington police because of inconsistent statements given by the victim.

Police received a report about 8:19 a.m. of multiple gunshots being fired in the area, said city police Cpl. Steve Devenney.

“The victim was driving down Gibson (from Locust), and as he approached the intersection with Sumner, the shots were fired from a vehicle going the opposite way on Gibson,” Devenney said. “But we have only a vague description of the vehicle – that it was gray, possibly a Chrysler sedan. But we have no idea if the driver of the car was a man or woman or if there was one person inside or 15.”

“The victim has been cooperative, but what he has told us has been inconsistent,” the corporal added. “His stories have changed several times. We are no further along this afternoon than when it happened.”

Devenney said the shooter’s vehicle likely turned onto Locust, but that is not certain. A few neighbors also heard the gunshots but did not witness the shooting.

The man was not injured, but one of the shots glanced off his car in the area where the driver’s door meets the front fender. Devenney said three shell casings and the jacket from the bullet that struck the car were found at the scene. The weapon used may have been of the AK-45 type, the corporal said.

The victim told Officer Matt Karlowsky that he was at a business in the 500 block of Jefferson Avenue prior to the incident.
