ALLENTOWN (AP) – The children of an eastern Pennsylvania man who killed himself during a standoff with police two years ago say in a lawsuit that officers violated the man’s civil rights by handling the incident poorly.

The Morning Call newspaper in Allentown reports the lawsuit was filed Tuesday in Allentown federal court. It names the Nazareth police chief, an officer and eight other borough officials as defendants.

The lawsuit says an officer ignored advice to summon crisis negotiators to the scene where 32-year-old Timothy Nixon had barricaded himself with a stolen gun. Officers stormed the apartment where Nixon was holding a gun to his head. He pulled the trigger.

The suit seeks more than $150,000.

Nazareth solicitor Alfred Pierce and Mayor Carl Strye Jr. didn’t return messages seeking comment.
