PITTSBURGH – Observer-Reporter staff members won a Golden Quill award Thursday night at the Press Club of Western Pennsylvania’s annual awards presentation at Sheraton Station Square Hotel.

The competition recognizes professional excellence in written, photographic, illustration, broadcast and online journalism in Western Pennsylvania.

The “No Longer Me” yearlong reporting project about Alzheimer’s disease and dementia won a Quill in the health/science/environment category.

Members of the special reporting project team were Liz Rogers, editor; Denise Bachman, managing editor of production; Michael Bradwell, business editor; Scott Beveridge, Brad Hundt, Mike Jones, Karen Mansfield, Barbara Miller, Emily Petsko, Francesca Sacco and Rick Shrum, staff writers; Katie Roupe and Jim McNutt, photographers; Nick Kratsas, online editor; and Robert Loar, web developer. Jon Stevens, former Greene County bureau chief, was also part of the team.

The series also received an honorable mention in the Pennsylvania News Media Association’s Keystone Press Awards.

The staff also won four Keystone Press Awards, in addition to the honorable mention for the “No Longer Me” series.

Night Editor Candace Wolf received a first place for front page design; Jones received an honorable mention for his coverage of a Ukrainian skater killed in a plane crash; staff writer Francesca Sacco won a second place for her feature, “Elderly inmates cared for at SCI-Laurel Highlands; and former staff writer Tara Kinsell received an honorable mention for feature beat reporting.

The Keystone Press awards will be presented next week in Gettysburg.
