1 min read

SOMERSET, Pa. (AP) — A trooper investigating a burglary at a western Pennsylvania grocery store fatally shot the suspect who pointed what turned out to be a BB gun at the officer.

State police say two troopers responded to a burglar alarm at the Save-a-lot grocery store in Somerset around 4 a.m. Friday.

Police say the troopers found the rear door pried open and one trooper confronted a man inside who was wearing dark clothing and holding a black handgun. The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Michael Lowrey of Somerset, allegedly pointed the gun at the trooper and the trooper fired, wounding Lowrey in the torso.

Police say it was only after the shooting that they determined that the weapon was a BB gun. The troopers weren’t identified.
