Masontown man charged with threatening two women in Cumberland Township
CARMICHAELS – A Masontown man is accused of threatening two women with a gun Saturday in Cumberland Village, prompting a search by several police departments and constables.
Robert Bailey, 42, was arrested and charged with terroristic threats, illegal possession of a firearm, burglary and other charges, Cumberland Township police said, and arraigned late Saturday night before District Judge Lou Dayich. He remains at the Greene County Jail on $100,000 bond.
Cumberland Township police were called at 4:20 p.m. to 151 Cumberland Village by two women who claimed a man known as “Angel” had pointed a small black pistol at them and threatened to shoot one of them in the face. Bailey knocked a telephone from the hand of one of the women when she attempted to call police, and told the women if they went to police he would shoot them or “have his girl call some people out to do it for him,” the criminal complaint said.
After talking to the women, police said they were directed to a house down the street, where Bailey had been seen earlier. Police knocked at the door and were alerted to someone in the back yard.
Bailey, who was in the backyard, fled when he saw police, jumping over a chain link fence and running toward East George Street. Police followed him but lost sight of him in a wooded area. A small black pistol was later found near the fence.
State police, Masontown police and state constables searched the area for several hours, finding Bailey in the area of Market Street. Bailey again fled and hid in an unknown location. He was later found hiding in the basement of a house, which police said he had entered by force. Bailey was arrested only after police threatened to release a police dog into the basement.
At the police station, Bailey allegedly threatened to shoot officers and said if he had had a knife he would have slit the police dog’s throat, according to the criminal complaint.
Police said Bailey was found with a small amount of marijuana. The .380-caliber handgun found near the fence had been reported stolen, police said.
The arresting officer, Patrolman Bryan Smith, said Monday the matter was still under investigation and he declined further comment.
Bailey was also charged with criminal trespass, receiving stolen property, flight to avoid apprehension, reckless endangering another person, simple assault, possession of a small amount of marijuana and harassment.
His preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. June 2.
