McDonald police are looking for the operators of two off-road vehicles who damaged the property of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 520 on Herron Street in Midway early Sunday.

Alicia Margerum, the manager of the post, wrote in an email sent Tuesday morning to the Observer-Reporter that she and her husband discovered the damage when they arrived Sunday morning to put American flags around the building for the Memorial Day weekend.

“To our shock and horror, the parking lot and yard were in shambles,” Margerum wrote. “Rocks were everywhere and there were ruts in the lawn.”

Officer Bradley Resnik, who is investigating the damage, said a blue all-terrain vehicle and a blue Polaris RZR with an 800 or 900cc engine parked outside Windsor Tavern, not far from the post at 113 St. John St. A witness reported seeing two people come out of the bar between 2:30 and 2:40 a.m. Sunday, get on the vehicles and spin doughnuts in the parking lot.

“In the process, the vehicles kicked up rocks that sprayed the building, broke a window at the post and damaged a pickup truck that was parked in the lot,” Resnik said.

Ruts also were made in the grassy area surrounding the lot and VFW building.

“Why would anyone do this to a veterans club, and on Memorial Day weekend?” Margerum said. “Such a shame.”

Anyone with information or who might have seen the incident is asked to call Resnik at 724-926-2105, ext. 27.
