One dead in South Fayette fire
A fire at Valleyfield Apartments unit in South Fayette Township Wednesday night left an 80-year-old man dead and his wife hospitalized.
The Allegheny County medical examiner identified the man as Albert Camburn. South Fayette police Chief John Phoennik said the man’s wife, Wanda, was taken to St. Clair Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation after the fire broke out at the apartment at 3520 Washington Pike around 7:40 p.m. Hospital spokesman Bob Crytzer said Mrs. Camburn was treated overnight and released.
Nearby residents said there was so much smoke the Fairview Fire Department and others had to use sledgehammers to knock down neighboring apartments’ walls to reach Camburn. Allegheny County Fire Marshall Chief Alvin Henderson said the fire started in a laundry room and damaged three other units. He said he doesn’t believe the fire is suspicious and is still working on an exact cause.
