Guy Reschenthaler won easily over Democrat Heather Arnet in the race for the vacant 37th District State Senate seat in Tuesday’s general election. The 37th District takes in much of the South Hills in Allegheny County and Peters Township in Washington County.

With 98 percent of Allegheny County precincts in, Reschenthaler had about 54 percent of the vote to 46 percent for Arnet. Reschenthaler had a huge lead over his opponent with about two-thirds of Washington County precincts in.

The candidates are vying to complete the term of formner Sen. Matt Smith, who resigned to head the Greater Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce.

Heather Arnet of Mt. Lebanon is the Democratic candidate, and Guy Reschenthaler of Jefferson Hills, the Republican.

Reschenthaler has held public office as district judge, a position to which he was elected in 2013. He resigned following his nomination by fellow Republicans to run for the Senate. Arnet is chief executive officer of the Women and Girls Foundation, a nonprofit advocacy group.
