California police continue to investigate fatal crash
California police continue to investigate the crash Monday night that killed one California University of Pennsylvania student and injured three other students.
Mason Reiff, 21, of Denver, Lancaster County, was pronounced dead at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, where he was flown after the 7:50 p.m. crash on Route 88, about one-half mile north of High Point Tavern. Also flown to Pittsburgh hospitals were three other occupants of the vehicle, Quinton Dean Shaner, 21, and Daren Jacobe Reinhart, 20, both of Elizabeth, and Jacqua Monte Starr, 19, of Wexford. Reiff was a junior in the communications studies department. Police Chief Rick Encapera said the three injured also were students at the university.
Encapera said Reinhart was released from AGH after he was treated for a head injury, while Starr was released from UPMC-Presbyterian hospital after he received treatment for bruises and contusions. Shaner remains at Presbyterian, where he is being treated for a severe leg injury. He is in fair condition.
Encapera said police are still trying to piece together the cause of the crash. The four occupants reportedly were ejected from the 1995 Ford Mustang when it crashed. The car went out of control at the top of a downhill grade and skidded into the hillside on the opposite side of the road. The car then crossed the road and struck the guardrail on the northbound side of Route 88. The chief said it appears the car spun around but did not roll over, because there was no damage to the vehicle’s roof.
“We’ve talked with one of the occupants,” Encapera said. “We do not know who was driving.”
Encapera said a state police reconstruction specialist is assisting in the investigation.
