A truck carrying saltwater used in natural gas drilling overturned in Amwell Township Friday night, apparently after the driver had a medical event.

Logs at EQT’s Gallagher Pad at 249 Carey Way, Amity, showed Robert Conway, 55, of Joffre Cherry Valley Road, Burgettstown, left the well site about 9 p.m. A co-worker found Conway inside the overturned water truck about 9:30 p.m.

Conway was pronounced dead at 10:50 p.m. Friday, according to Washington County Coroner Tim Warco.

The truck was hauling 109 barrels of saltwater, and about 79 barrels leaked out and into a nearby field, according to John Poister, a spokesman for the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.

It’s also believed less than 10 gallons of motor oil escaped from the truck, but that very little of it or water from the truck seeped into a nearby tributary of Ten Mile Creek. A clean-up crew was at the site Saturday.

Teams from Lone Pine Fire Department, Ambulance & Chair and Washington County Hazmat assisted state police.

The DEP and state police are investigating.
