Man convicted in 1985 mail bomb arrested on parole violation

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Authorities in western Pennsylvania say a man convicted of sending a mail bomb that exploded at a post office three decades ago has been arrested at a parole violation.

Allegheny County and federal authorities said 60-year-old Randall McFadden walked away from a halfway house after completing a 30-year sentence in the 1985 blast at the Warrendale bulk postal center. Officials said he had tried to mail a pipe bomb to a woman in New York but it went off in the postal facility, causing extensive damage but no injuries.

Authorities said they found McFadden on Saturday at Heritage Valley Hospital in Beaver County, where he was taken after a hunter found him in the woods in Chippewa Township, severely dehydrated and malnourished. He was taken to the Allegheny County Jail.
