GRAYSVILLE – West Greene School District is preparing to sell two of its former elementary schools – including all of their contents – at a public auction soon.

Graysville Elementary School in Graysville and Springhill-Freeport Elementary School in New Freeport will be up for sale in the public auction, although no dates have been set, according to West Greene Superintendent Thelma Szarell.

“We do plan on also having a public auction and selling the contents of the building as well one Saturday possibly in December, but we don’t have any dates set yet,” Szarell said.

The auction will include lockers, chalkboards and other storage items. Those items will be auctioned off before the auction for the buildings is held.

Both schools were closed in June to move the elementary students into a new building situated next to the high school.

Dates for the public auctions will be announced when they are finalized, Szarell said.

Graysville opened in 1970, while Springhill-Freeport, which had only 70 students in its final year, opened in 1953.

The new West Greene Elementary Center, which has more than 300 students, opened for the new school year in August.
