WAYNESBURG – Central Greene School District purchased about 17 acres of vacant land near its football stadium with the hope all school buildings will one day be located on a single campus.

At Tuesday’s meeting, the board voted unanimously to approve the purchase of 16.97 acres in Franklin Township from R.W.C. Holding, LLC.

Superintendent Brian Uplinger said the district decided to buy the land because “they don’t make it anymore” and “the campus is kind of landlocked.”

Uplinger said he hopes the land can eventually be used to build a new middle school and have one campus for Central Greene School District.

“Margaret Bell Miller Middle School is on its last life,” Uplinger said.

The building was constructed in 1928 and was used as the high school until 1969, when the new high school building was opened.

If his vision comes true, Uplinger thinks it will save the district money and help the campus environment grow. The school district has no definitive plans or a timeline on when a new middle school might be built.

The asking price was $950,000, but the district bought the property for $550,000, according to board solicitor Kirk King. The land is near the football field by Park Avenue. It is vacant and is mostly wooded.

“We do not have any immediate plans for the property,” King said. “But we know it will be of use to the campus in the future.”
