Incline to be set for Light-up Night

1 min read

PITTSBURGH – An incline that gives sightseers a panoramic view of Pittsburgh has reopened earlier than expected, in plenty of time for the city’s Light Up Night festivities.

The Monongahela Incline has been closed since Sept. 8 for a $3.5 million project to improve its cars, rails and control system.

The Port Authority of Allegheny County targeted Light-up Night – the celebration opening the Christmas shopping season Friday – but were able to reopen the incline Wednesday. That will give crews two days to test the 635-foot incline.

The incline, which opened in 1870, is the oldest continually operating funicular in the country.

About 1,700 people use it daily during the week in fall and winter.

, with weekend and special-event ridership at least tripling.
