SCI-Greene officer assaulted by inmate
WAYNESBURG – An inmate serving a life sentence assaulted a corrections officer Thursday morning at the State Correctional Institution at Greene.
The officer was taken to an area hospital following the incident, which occurred about 8 a.m. in a general population housing unit, SCI-Greene Administrations Officer Debbie Brumage said.
The officer was treated and later released. Brumage said she did not know the nature of the injuries.
The inmate was placed in the prison’s restrictive housing unit, she said. The names of the corrections officer and the inmate were not immediately released.
The assault is being investigated by state police and prison staff, Brumage said.
As a result of the incident, the institution was placed on a lockdown. Brumage said late Thursday afternoon she was unsure how long the state prison, located in Franklin Township, would remain in lockdown status, but she expected it would continue until the investigation is completed.
Visitors were turned away from the lobby Thursday morning and told by workers the prison was temporarily closed.
“We take these incidents very seriously,” Brumage said. At the prison, she said, “it’s always safety first.”
