Resident petitions court to serve on school board
Diane Scrip of Roscoe petitioned Washington County Court for appointment to a vacancy on California Area School Board.
Scrip, who retired after a 20-year teaching career in 2009, hopes to replace Karin Watson, who resigned Oct. 12. Watson was elected in November 2013 to a term that lasts until 2017.
Scrip, in a letter dated Oct. 16, made known her interest in being appointed to the vacancy. She mailed the request to Brian Jackson, superintendent, and the eight remaining members of the school board. Scrip’s children attended California schools, and her grandchildren are enrolled there.
According to Scrip’s petition, the school board had until Nov. 11 to select Watson’s replacement. The board met Nov. 9, but the votes on candidates resulted in deadlocks.
Scrip did not attend the meeting. “I was out of town at the time,” she said Friday.
The court has not set a date to consider the matter.
Watson, who was first vice president of the nine-member board, represented Region III, which, in addition to Roscoe, includes Allenport, Coal Center, Elco and Long Branch.
