SWISSVALE – A woman says her 17-year-old son was shot five times as he left his house for school in the Pittsburgh suburbs.

Swissvale and Allegheny County police are investigating the shooting about 6:30 a.m. Monday.

They didn’t immediately identify the victim, but Dana Lawrence told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review the victim is her son, Michael Copeland.

She says someone rushed at him as he left his house and shot him five times. He has a broken hip and broken ankle, among other injuries.

Swissvale is one of several communities just east of Pittsburgh that have been wracked by gun violence in recent months.

Police haven’t said whether they have a suspect.
